Cities to consider in your Japan holiday

Plan time for the city as well as the train. These guides suggest sights and local flavors for a separately arranged stay; they do not promise included excursions.

Tokyo

Tokyo is easier to enjoy when approached as a series of neighbourhoods, each with its own scale and character. Ueno offers parkland and museums, while Asakusa connects temple streets with a strong sense of the city's older entertainment and commercial life. These districts also illustrate why a short stay benefits from focus rather than constant cross-city movement. Rail travellers should make the departure station part of their hotel decision, then leave time for a chosen area. A quiet museum session, a neighbourhood meal and an evening walk can be more memorable than an exhausting list of landmarks.

A taste of the city. Tokyo's food range extends across Japan, but traditional districts such as Asakusa also preserve long-standing local dining customs. A modest noodle meal, carefully chosen sushi or an izakaya visit can each provide a different introduction. Around Ueno, railway-side dining offers another characteristic setting. Ask about broths and sauces when discussing dietary needs, and choose a few experiences that suit your appetite rather than making every meal a competitive search for a famous address.

Fukuoka

Fukuoka is an inviting place to begin a Kyushu rail journey, with a food culture that can turn a practical overnight stop into one of the holiday's pleasures. Hakata is the principal railway name travellers will encounter, while the wider city offers parkland, shopping districts and evening food stalls. Give yourself time to explore beyond the station precinct. A gentle walk in Ohori Park and a carefully chosen meal provide a satisfying introduction without an overfull schedule. An extra night is useful when an important train departure follows an international arrival or a connection from elsewhere in Japan.

A taste of the city. Hakata ramen combines thin noodles with a rich pork-bone broth, making it a recognisable starting point for Fukuoka's cooking. Yatai may also serve gyoza, oden or grilled skewers, but menus vary. Order modestly in these small spaces and be considerate of other diners waiting for seats. If you avoid pork or have other dietary requirements, ask directly about the broth and sauces; removing a topping does not change the base of the dish.

Yufuin

Yufuin offers a quieter rhythm within a Kyushu journey, with a basin landscape, hot-spring accommodation and a walkable route between the station area and Lake Kinrin. The main streets can be lively, but the appeal also lies in stepping away from them to appreciate the rural surroundings. This is a place where an overnight stay and a carefully chosen ryokan can matter more than a long attraction list. For rail travellers, distinguish a brief excursion from a genuine stay: bathing, meals and time in the landscape each need their own space in the itinerary.

A taste of the city. Local dairy products appear in Yufuin's sweets and snacks, including milk-based desserts, cheese preparations and ice cream. These make a pleasant small pause, but a ryokan dinner can be a very different, more substantial experience. Confirm whether meals are included in your room arrangement and explain dietary requirements well in advance. Avoid filling the afternoon with snacks if an elaborate evening meal is planned; leave room to appreciate both the town and the accommodation.

Kyoto

Kyoto rewards attention more than speed. A temple view, a seasonal ingredient or the detail of a small street can be more revealing than a day spent crossing the city between famous names. Choose a geographical area for each outing, allowing time for the approaches as well as the main attraction. Kiyomizu-dera and the eastern hills provide one distinctive experience, while central markets offer another. Around a rail journey, extra nights create space to explore with consideration for residents and worshippers. Kyoto and Osaka are separate cities, so a combined route label should never replace precise joining instructions.

A taste of the city. Kyoto's culinary traditions include refined kaiseki, Buddhist vegetarian cooking and obanzai associated with everyday meals. These represent different experiences and budgets, not a single menu available everywhere. Tofu skin, seasonal vegetables and carefully prepared side dishes offer approachable starting points. Explain dietary requirements before reserving, especially where a set meal is served. A market visit can improve your understanding of ingredients without replacing the time needed for a thoughtful seated lunch or dinner.
