Kyoto Tango Kuro-Matsu

Kuro-Matsu is Kyoto Tango Railway's restaurant-train experience, with seasonal courses connecting places such as Fukuchiyama, Amanohashidate and Nishi-Maizuru. It belongs to Kyoto's wider northern region rather than the city's familiar temple circuit. This is a short seated dining journey, not a sleeper or an all-day escorted tour. Select the food course and its route together, since different departures create different experiences.

For the right route, service level and date for your journey, email our rail specialists with your preferred travel period and number of guests.

The journey in perspective

What makes Kuro-Matsu distinctive?

The train offers a useful reason to spend more time in northern Kyoto, making the meal and local landscape equally important. A coastal lunch route has a different character from a breakfast journey beginning inland, even though both use the same named train. Treat published stops as part of that specific course rather than universal features of Kuro-Matsu. Shared tables may be used, so private dining should not be assumed. Arrive with time to spare and leave space afterwards for Amanohashidate or another independently planned regional stay.

Accommodation, service levels and life on board

This is not an overnight sleeper service. Compare the exact seating or service class, dining arrangements and accessibility of the chosen carriage. Any hotel nights in a wider package are separate from accommodation aboard the train.

  • Reserved restaurant-car table seating; shared tables may apply

Dining and the daily rhythm

The operator sells named seasonal courses, with menus and allergen information published for each. The meal is central to the product, but drinks and other extras should be checked individually. WILLER warns that some menus cannot be changed, making dietary suitability a decision to resolve before booking.

Tell us about dietary requirements when you inquire. Included beverages, special menus and the pace of off-train visits should be confirmed for the exact departure.

How to plan this journey well

Book the course, date and direction as one package and check the reporting time, which can precede the departure noticeably. Confirm whether shared seating applies. Travel to northern Kyoto requires its own planning from Kyoto or Osaka, so allow a buffer and do not confuse a Kuro-Matsu booking with the ordinary trains serving the same stations.

Who will enjoy it most?

Food-focused travellers exploring northern Kyoto who want a short restaurant-train occasion and are happy to plan regional transport and accommodation independently.

Accessibility and individual needs

Ask WILLER TRAINS to assess boarding, restaurant seating, toilet access and any planned stop for your needs. Explain assistance and dietary requirements together before payment, since a small restaurant carriage offers limited flexibility on the day.

Share mobility needs, luggage concerns and any important personal requirements before paying a deposit. We will request the relevant details; an inquiry is not a guarantee that a particular request can be accommodated.

Tango Travel Lunch Course

Kyoto Tango Kuro-Matsu

The officially published April–September 2026 lunch course links Amanohashidate with Nishi-Maizuru as a compact food-led journey. It is a representative seasonal product, not a promise that the same menu continues indefinitely. Build the day around the operator's reporting time, confirm dietary suitability and arrange independent transport at both ends. The map uses endpoints and does not turn brief scenic pauses into separate destination visits.
