The Canadian

The Canadian is VIA Rail's transcontinental passenger service between Toronto and Vancouver, with Prestige providing its most indulgent accommodation. It is important to choose the class carefully: the same train also carries Sleeper Plus and Economy travellers. For a premium journey, combine the changing Canadian landscapes with a private Prestige cabin, included dining and time to settle into the rhythm of several nights aboard.

The journey in perspective

What makes The Canadian distinctive?

Prestige is designed around a private cabin for two, with a daytime leather sofa that converts into a double bed and an ensuite shower. Concierge service and reserved seating privileges add convenience, while the broader journey remains a working passenger railway rather than a private charter. Sleeper Plus offers a different proposition, with compact cabins or berths and shared showers. Decide first whether your priority is privacy, a particular bed arrangement or the full transcontinental crossing; these choices have a greater impact than the train's name alone.

Accommodation, service levels and life on board

Choose accommodation by the way you want to travel: sleeping arrangement, bathroom facilities, room to move and daytime seating. Category names alone do not make two trains equivalent.

Dining and the daily rhythm

Dining-car service is a central part of the sleeper experience. VIA's onboard chefs offer changing meal choices, with meat, fish and vegetarian main courses. Prestige includes bar service, while Sleeper Plus drinks inclusions differ. Dietary arrangements need advance discussion; do not assume a photographed dish or a particular specialist meal will be available on every departure.

Tell us about dietary requirements when you inquire. Included beverages, special menus and the pace of off-train visits should be confirmed for the exact departure.

How to plan this journey well

Confirm the exact accommodation, departure dates and arrival day before arranging flights. VIA describes the full crossing as about four days and four nights, and railway timings should not be treated as a guaranteed connection. Build flexibility around the journey, especially if adding independently booked tours. The train does not offer onboard Wi-Fi. Keep essential medication and overnight items readily accessible, and check baggage arrangements for your actual stations.

Who will enjoy it most?

Travellers who value a true overnight crossing of Canada and want to compare Prestige privacy with the more traditional Sleeper Plus experience.

Accessibility and individual needs

Request an individual assessment from VIA before booking. An accessible cabin for two is offered, but narrow corridors restrict movement with mobility aids and some stations are not accessible. Confirm boarding, bathroom, bed-transfer and meal-service arrangements together.

Share mobility needs, luggage concerns and any important personal requirements before paying a deposit. We will request the relevant details; an inquiry is not a guarantee that a particular request can be accommodated.

Make the train part of a complete holiday

The Canadian

Make the transcontinental crossing the centre of the holiday, travelling from Ontario through the Prairies and the Rockies to Vancouver. Request Prestige if a private shower and additional service are priorities. This is a continuous rail journey, not a promise of guided sightseeing at intermediate station stops.
