Koshino Shu*Kura

Koshino Shu*Kura gives a daytime railway journey a distinctly Niigata theme, drawing on the region's sake culture. It combines reserved seating with a social event area and dedicated food-and-drink packages in one car. The same train also operates named route variants, so the destination is not fixed across all departures. It is an occasion for interested adult travellers, not an overnight luxury train.

The journey in perspective

What makes Koshino Shu*Kura distinctive?

The experience depends on the product you choose. A Car 3 reservation provides a more conventional seated journey with access to the train's atmosphere, while the applicable Car 1 packages place regional cuisine and sake more firmly at the centre. The shared counter area adds a sociable element without requiring constant participation. Non-drinkers should examine the package value and alternatives carefully. Plan onward transport sensibly, especially if tasting alcohol, and confirm the route name rather than assuming every Shu*Kura departure ends in Tokamachi.

Accommodation, service levels and life on board

This is not an overnight sleeper service. Compare the exact seating or service class, dining arrangements and accessibility of the chosen carriage. Any hotel nights in a wider package are separate from accommodation aboard the train.

  • Car 3 reserved reclining seats
  • Car 1 Raku Raku box seats through applicable packages
  • Car 1 viewing loveseats through applicable packages

Dining and the daily rhythm

JR East distinguishes the Car 1 food-and-sake packages from ordinary Car 3 tickets. The service counter also sells local drinks and snacks, and tasting arrangements can involve extra charges. Confirm exactly what your product includes and request dietary or non-alcoholic information before reserving.

Tell us about dietary requirements when you inquire. Included beverages, special menus and the pace of off-train visits should be confirmed for the exact departure.

How to plan this journey well

Match the date to the route variant and terminal station, then choose between a rail-seat reservation and the separately sold Car 1 package. Booking channels can differ. Do not treat a rail pass as covering the dining package, and arrange accommodation or onward public transport that lets you enjoy the experience without driving afterwards.

Who will enjoy it most?

Adult travellers interested in Japanese regional food and sake who want a sociable rail outing and can choose the package that matches their interests.

Accessibility and individual needs

Request a carriage-specific assessment from JR East for boarding, seating, toilet access and movement to the event area. Explain whether transferring from a wheelchair is possible; do not assume a package seat offers the same access as another car.

Share mobility needs, luggage concerns and any important personal requirements before paying a deposit. We will request the relevant details; an inquiry is not a guarantee that a particular request can be accommodated.
