What to Pack for a Luxury Rail Journey

From formal dinners to safari drives and Japanese seasonal excursions, build a compact wardrobe around the actual itinerary.

Pack for the itinerary

A polished onboard wardrobe is only part of the plan. Safari drives, temple visits, Highland walks, high-altitude mornings and tropical humidity each demand practical clothing.

Use layers

Train interiors can be climate controlled while platforms and excursions vary sharply in temperature. Lightweight, packable layers are more useful than one heavy garment.

Respect the evening atmosphere

Check the specific train. Some journeys encourage formal or black-tie dress; many others are smart casual. Comfortable, elegant footwear matters in moving carriages.

Keep essentials close

Cabin storage is limited. Carry medication, documents, a compact overnight kit and valuables in a manageable bag, especially when main luggage is stored separately.

Pack for the route, not only the dining car

A Royal Scotsman journey can call for practical layers for country visits as well as evening clothes. Andean Explorer adds high-altitude conditions to the planning. On Eastern & Oriental Express, consider warm-weather touring and comfortable indoor layers.

Keep travel documents, prescribed medicines and essential overnight items accessible. Confirm luggage dimensions and storage with your final documents; heritage compartments rarely provide the space of a large hotel room.
