African Explorer

African Explorer is the train at the centre of Lernidee's escorted journeys through southern Africa. The Namibia programme combines sleeping-car travel with excursions and lodge stays, connecting Cape Town and Windhoek through markedly different landscapes. Its character is exploratory and sociable, with a relaxed onboard atmosphere. The published programme is German-speaking, an important distinction for English-speaking travellers comparing luxury rail holidays.

The journey in perspective

What makes African Explorer distinctive?

This journey is as much about time away from the railway as time aboard. The representative Namibia itinerary includes visits to the Namib Desert and Etosha, with lodge nights interspersed among train nights. Back aboard, the lounge and open observation platform provide a place to appreciate the changing surroundings. Current accommodation names are Pullman Silver, Pullman Gold and Deluxe, all with private bathrooms. The larger Deluxe category adds sitting space. Check the precise train allocation and programme language before booking, especially when comparing information that still uses older cabin names.

Accommodation, service levels and life on board

Choose accommodation by the way you want to travel: sleeping arrangement, bathroom facilities, room to move and daytime seating. Category names alone do not make two trains equivalent.

Dining and the daily rhythm

African and European dishes are served in the train's two restaurant carriages, with dinner described as a three-course meal in one sitting. Meals at lodges and on excursions follow the itinerary. The onboard bar adds a sociable setting between activities. Ask which beverages are included and discuss dietary needs before committing to the tour.

Tell us about dietary requirements when you inquire. Included beverages, special menus and the pace of off-train visits should be confirmed for the exact departure.

How to plan this journey well

Choose the exact itinerary and distinguish the land-only duration from versions including flights from Germany. Request a night-by-night accommodation summary, the confirmed language of guiding and the current cabin names. The Namibia programme includes coach excursions and lodge stays, so pack a small bag for nights away from the train. Arrange nationality-specific entry guidance and appropriate travel cover, and avoid tight onward connections while the railway schedule is being finalised.

Who will enjoy it most?

Travellers comfortable with a German-speaking escorted group who want Namibia's desert and wildlife experiences combined with a relaxed sleeping train and lodge stays.

Accessibility and individual needs

Request a personal assessment from Lernidee of the train, coach travel, lodge accommodation and excursion terrain. Explain your walking tolerance and mobility equipment before booking. The combined desert, wildlife and rail programme can pose different access challenges on different days.

Share mobility needs, luggage concerns and any important personal requirements before paying a deposit. We will request the relevant details; an inquiry is not a guarantee that a particular request can be accommodated.

Planning questions

African Explorer FAQs

Are all nights spent on the African Explorer?

No. The representative Namibia itinerary includes eight train nights alongside hotel and lodge accommodation. Confirm the full overnight breakdown for your departure.

What are the current cabin names?

Lernidee's current train page lists Pullman Silver, Pullman Gold and Deluxe. Older pages still use Elefant and Leopard, so ask which specification applies to your quote.

Is the Namibia programme guided in English?

The published Lernidee itinerary specifies German-speaking tour leadership and guides. An English-language website summary does not mean the departure is English-guided.
