Published route, stage by stage
Route stage 1Pretoria
Pretoria is more than a place to board a celebrated train. Its administrative landmarks, museums and memorials provide important context for South Africa's history, while its neighbourhood restaurants reflect a much wider range of communities and influences. A measured city visit can pair one historical site with a quiet meal before departure. The surrounding metropolitan area is extensive, so a short stay should be planned around practical transfers rather than a dense walking circuit. Arriving in advance gives time to settle, confirm the railway arrangements and engage with the place from which the journey begins. The sights described are ideas for the wider trip; the confirmed programme determines whether and how they are visited.
Route stage 2Kruger region
Kruger region is identified on the published route. The precise timing, touring content and method of transfer can vary by departure and must be confirmed.
Route stage 3Maputo
Maputo is identified on the published route. The precise timing, touring content and method of transfer can vary by departure and must be confirmed.
Route stage 4Eswatini
Eswatini is identified on the published route. The precise timing, touring content and method of transfer can vary by departure and must be confirmed.
Route stage 5Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe is identified on the published route. The precise timing, touring content and method of transfer can vary by departure and must be confirmed.
Route stage 6Victoria Falls
Victoria Falls town on the Zimbabwean side is a natural place to extend a southern African rail journey. The waterfall is the principal draw, but the wider Zambezi setting rewards time beyond a single viewing walk. River conditions shape the experience, from spray and visibility at the falls to the suitability of particular activities. A stay should therefore allow some flexibility. The town must also be distinguished from Livingstone across the border in Zambia: they offer access to the same great river landscape but require different transfers, accommodation choices and travel formalities. The sights described are ideas for the wider trip; the confirmed programme determines whether and how they are visited.
