Rail journeys in India

A richer way to understand the destination.

India’s luxury trains transform complex multi-city touring into a single escorted journey, combining private cabins with palaces, wildlife, temples and living culture.

A well-chosen rail journey can become the centerpiece of a wider holiday. Consider the season, route direction, service class and comfortable time before and after boarding. Email our travel specialists with your priorities and we will help shape a journey that feels complete rather than simply assembled.

Choose the right journey

Palaces, wildlife and a carefully chosen pace

Maharajas’ Express, Palace on Wheels and Deccan Odyssey bring different parts of India into focus. Rajasthan’s forts and palaces suit a first heritage journey; a broader circuit can introduce landscapes and historic sites beyond the familiar Delhi–Agra–Jaipur triangle.

Compare the actual sightseeing programme, not just the number of nights. Early starts, coach journeys, steps and time outdoors influence comfort. Ask which visits are included, which are optional, and how much free time remains between excursions.

Cities along the journey

Cities to consider in your India holiday

Plan time for the city as well as the train. These guides suggest sights and local flavors for a separately arranged stay; they do not promise included excursions.

India

Delhi

Delhi introduces the scale and variety of India before the first long-distance train departs. Monumental Mughal architecture, busy market streets and the spacious districts of the modern capital offer very different experiences within one city. Resist the temptation to combine every landmark on arrival day. A carefully chosen historical visit and a slower meal will often give a stronger first impression than hours spent crossing town. An overnight stay before a fixed rail departure is particularly useful, allowing time to recover from international travel, organise luggage and begin the journey with a sense of place.

A taste of the city. Delhi's food culture ranges from chaat and stuffed breads to kebabs and slow-cooked dishes. Chaat can combine crisp, soft, sweet and tangy elements within a single serving, making it an engaging introduction to local flavours. Choose food thoughtfully and explain dietary requirements clearly, since dairy, wheat and meat stocks may not be obvious. A seated meal in a carefully selected setting can provide a more relaxed first experience than immediately attempting a long street-food circuit.

Darjeeling

Darjeeling brings tea country and Himalayan railway history into the same hillside setting. The experience is not only about a distant mountain panorama: its steep streets, tea rooms and everyday life remain rewarding when clouds obscure the horizon. The narrow-gauge railway provides a distinctive way to engage with the town's history, but a short tourist ride should not be confused with every possible through journey. Give Darjeeling enough time for a measured visit, with a flexible day for changing weather and an appreciation that road transfers in the hills are part of the overall travel commitment.

A taste of the city. Darjeeling tea deserves to be tasted thoughtfully, with attention to style and your own preferences rather than simply buying a famous name. The town's wider cooking reflects Himalayan connections, including Tibetan-influenced foods and savoury snacks. A warm meal and a tea-room pause suit the hill setting particularly well. Ask what is freshly prepared, clarify ingredients and allow time to enjoy the stop instead of fitting every meal between transfers or scheduled rail rides.

Bengaluru

Bengaluru offers a useful transition into southern India, combining the pace of a large contemporary city with gardens, older neighbourhoods and an enduring breakfast-and-coffee culture. Its green spaces make particularly pleasant first outings after a long arrival, when another major museum may be less appealing than a walk. Choose one part of the city for each session rather than spending the day crossing between distant landmarks. For a rail holiday, a pre-departure stay provides practical value as well as interest: time to recover, check the joining instructions and begin with a calm introduction to Karnataka.

A taste of the city. A masala dosa and coffee provide a straightforward introduction to Bengaluru's food culture. The pleasure lies in the contrast between a crisp dosa, its filling and the accompanying sauces, rather than in an elaborate restaurant setting. Other meals can explore the wider cooking of Karnataka. Ask about ghee, dairy and the ingredients of chutneys if needed, and remember that vegetarian does not necessarily mean vegan or free from particular allergens.

Agra

Agra is often approached with one image in mind, but the Taj Mahal becomes more meaningful when seen alongside the wider history of the Mughal city. The fort provides an important counterpoint, revealing imperial power as well as courtly architecture. A dedicated stay gives you time to visit without the pressure of a rushed round trip, while an organised rail excursion may follow a much more specific programme. Decide which kind of experience your itinerary permits. Even a short visit benefits from time to stop, absorb the details and let the monuments set the pace.

A taste of the city. Agra's familiar food souvenirs include petha, a sweet confection, and dal moth, a savoury snack mixture. Small tastes provide an easy introduction without requiring a full food itinerary. For a longer meal, ask about local and Mughal-influenced preparations while choosing dishes that suit your appetite and dietary needs. Avoid buying large quantities of perishable food immediately before boarding; a modest purchase and a relaxed lunch leave more room for the journey ahead.

The complete uphill journey is the clearest way to understand the contrast between the foothills, the steep lower railway and the higher Coonoor–Ooty section. It is a transport journey as well as a heritage experience, so the selected service determines stops, class and duration.
